New Inveraray Distillery Approved at Historic Castle Estate

New Inveraray Distillery Approved at Historic Castle Estate

Plans for a new Scotch whisky distillery at the Inveraray Castle Estate have officially been approved, marking a significant new chapter for one of Scotland’s most historic locations and for the future of whisky production in Argyll.

Council officers at Argyll and Bute Council have granted planning permission for the project, which will see a purpose-built distillery and visitor centre developed within the estate’s former walled garden.

A Major Investment in Scotch Whisky Production

The proposal, submitted by Stock Spirits (UK) Ltd, outlines the creation of Inveraray Distillery, a new single malt Scotch whisky distillery with an annual production capacity of up to two million litres of alcohol.

The distillery will produce a standalone single malt whisky under the Inveraray name, while also contributing spirit to the well-known Clan Campbell blend. With modern infrastructure and carefully planned capacity, the project represents a meaningful long-term investment in Scotch whisky making.

Visitor Centre Designed to Boost Tourism

Alongside the distillery, the plans include a visitor centre featuring tasting rooms, retail space and a bar, designed to become a major tourism draw for the area. Distillery tours and curated tastings will encourage visitors to extend their stay in Inveraray, supporting the wider local economy.

Notably, the planning application attracted no public objections, reflecting strong local alignment with the development.

Council Approval and Local Development Alignment

Planning officials confirmed that the project aligns with the region’s second local development plan, citing its compatibility with the estate setting and its economic and tourism benefits. With formal approval now granted, the project can move forward into its construction phase.

Sustainability and Local Employment at the Core

According to the design and access statement submitted with the application, sustainability has been embedded into the project from the outset. The distillery will be built using environmentally friendly solutions, with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality from day one.

The development is also expected to create more than 20 full-time equivalent jobs, prioritising local employment and working in cooperation with regional contractors, suppliers and craftspeople.

A Distillery Deeply Rooted in Clan Campbell History

Inveraray Castle has been the seat of the Argyll family since the 15th century, and the connection between the estate and Clan Campbell remains central to the project’s identity.

The statement highlights that producing single malt Scotch whisky within the castle grounds represents a “significant positive development” for the local community, the estate and the clan itself. The site benefits from a plentiful supply of high-quality water, a critical natural resource for distilling.

Torquhil Campbell, 13th Duke of Argyll and Chief of Clan Campbell, has long been an ambassador for the Clan Campbell blend and a vocal supporter of the Scotch whisky industry, further reinforcing the authenticity and heritage behind the project.

Inveraray’s Whisky Future

With planning permission secured, Inveraray Distillery is set to become a notable new name in Scotch whisky—combining historic lineage, modern sustainability standards and a strong focus on tourism and community benefit.

As global interest in premium Scotch whisky continues to grow, developments like Inveraray Distillery highlight the ongoing evolution of the industry while remaining firmly grounded in tradition.
