The Macallan 1926 Adami Breaks Records Selling for £2.2 million ($2.7 million) at Auction

The Macallan 1926 Adami Breaks Records Selling for £2.2 million ($2.7 million) at Auction

In a recent landmark auction hosted by Sotheby's in London, a significant event unfolded in the world of whisky and wine investment – The Macallan 1926 Adami claimed the spotlight by becoming the highest-selling spirit or wine, securing an impressive £2,187,500 (US$2,714,250).

This auction, held on November 18th 2023, surpassed expectations, underlining the growing importance of rare and sought-after spirits in investment portfolios. Let's delve into the specifics of this historic moment for enthusiasts and investors alike.

The Macallan 1926 Adami: The Most Valuable Whisky Bottle in the World

The Macallan 1926 is not just a whisky; it's a coveted investment piece that spent six decades maturing in Sherry casks before being bottled in 1986.

With only 40 bottles in existence, this limited edition, the oldest from The Macallan at the time, holds a special place in the world of alternative investments.

Among these 40 bottles:

  • 12 were artistically designed by Sir Peter Blake
  • 14 featured the Fine & Rare labels
  • 12 were released without any labels but painted by Valerio Adami in 1993

Rarity and Investment Value

The exclusivity of The Macallan 1926 Adami is accentuated by the belief that only 10 intact bottles designed by Adami remain. Unfortunately, one was reportedly lost during a Japanese earthquake in 2011, and at least one has been opened and enjoyed. These factors contribute to the scarcity and investment value of this particular edition, making it a desirable asset for whisky and wine investment portfolios.

Auction Records and Investment Trends

Before this groundbreaking sale, The Macallan 1926 had already set auction records multiple times between 2018 and 2019, with variants like Sir Peter Blake, Michael Dillon, and Fine & Rare commanding attention. These record-breaking sales underscore the rising trend of alternative investments in the form of rare and collectable spirits.

The Investment-Grade Sale

Sotheby's collaborated closely with The Macallan to prepare the Adami bottle for auction.

The bottle went through an extensive process of reconditioning and authentication, unusual in the world of alternative investments. The meticulous process involved replacing the capsule and cork, applying new glue to the corners of the bottle labels, and conducting liquid sample testing against another 1926 bottle at the Edrington offices in Glasgow.

Edrington's involvement, as the owner of The Macallan, attests to the commitment to maintaining the investment-grade quality of this historic bottle.

A Milestone for Whisky Collectors?

The sale of The Macallan 1926 Adami for almost £2.2 million ($2.7 million) not only broke world records but also marked a significant milestone for whisky and wine investment enthusiasts.

As the demand for rare and exceptional spirits continues to rise, this investment-grade sale serves as a testament to the enduring value of carefully curated portfolios. In an ever-evolving investment landscape, the allure of alternative investments in the form of unique spirits remains a compelling narrative for those seeking diversified and valuable assets.
