Ian Macleod Distillers and The Islay Boys Set to Open Laggan Bay Distillery in 2025

Family-owned Ian Macleod Distillers, in collaboration with The Islay Boys, is thrilled to provide an update on their newest venture: the Laggan Bay Distillery on Islay.

The 12th Whisky Distillery on Islay

Laggan Bay will be the 12th whisky distillery on this famed Hebridean island, known for its peaty whiskies. Currently under construction, the distillery is set to be completed in 2025, when its handmade copper pot stills will begin producing their first spirits.

Ambitious Plans

While many details are still under wraps, Ian Macleod Distillers has ambitious plans for Laggan Bay. This new addition will join the company's impressive portfolio of premium spirits, which includes Glengoyne, Tamdhu, Edinburgh Gin, and the soon-to-be-reopened Rosebank. The distillery is a partnership with The Islay Boys, whose recently completed brewery is conveniently located next to the distillery at Glenegedale, near the picturesque Laggan Bay.

Leonard Russell, Managing Director at Ian Macleod Distillers, expressed his excitement: “I am delighted to be partnering with my friends, The Islay Boys, to build Laggan Bay distillery. It’s a very exciting project, which will allow us to offer a brand-new Islay single malt before the end of the decade.”

Sustainable Practices

In line with their commitment to sustainability, the Laggan Bay Distillery will feature wetlands to manage liquid waste and create a sanctuary for local wildlife.

Ian Macleod Distillers' sister distillery, Glengoyne, was the first Scotch whisky distillery to implement wetlands for waste management and received a Green Tourism Gold Award in 2023.

The company is also collaborating with the Islay Energy Trust and Scottish Power to explore renewable energy options, pledging to use green flame energy to reduce carbon emissions.

Future Updates

More details will be shared later this year, and visitors to Islay’s 2024 Fèis Ìle will have the chance to view the plans and the soon-to-be-completed Warehouse 1.

If you're attending the 2024 Fèis Ìle festival, be sure to stop by The Islay Boys' brewery – Islay Ales Co Ltd. at Glenegedale, across from the distillery site, for more information on this exciting new project.
